“Sedition Case Kicked to Lusaka High Court”
By Staff Reporter | Solwezi, 13 October 2026

SOLWEZI—In a dramatic turn today, Magistrate Hon. Mambwe Mukonde ruled that her court has no jurisdiction to hear the sedition case against leading opposition figure Brian Mundubile and his deputy Makebi Zulu.

She declared that the matter must be transferred to the High Court in Lusaka, since the alleged offences occurred in the capital on 14 August, the tense vote counting day after disputed elections in Zambia.

Court records show Mundubile is accused of urging the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to release presidential results “as expeditiously as possible.” Zulu faces a separate count for posting online that Mundubile would address the nation that same day.

The remark drew chuckles in recent past from defence lawyer Sakwiba Sikota SC, while State Counsel Bonaventure Mutale led the defence today in Solwezi winning round one of the ongoing trial.
This ruling means the duo will now face proceedings in the Lusaka High court, where the sedition charges were formally laid on 9 September 2026. Yet the shadow of treason looms large: Mundubile and Zulu were first arrested on 27 August and, alongside 18 others, have not appeared before a judge for treason in violation of constitutional timelines.

Among their co accused are Bishop Trevor Mwamba, 68, a retired Anglican priest, George Chisanga, a Cambridge educated lawyer, and businessman Patrick Mwansa.
Despite weeks in detention and visible weight loss, Mundubile and Zulu arrived in court smartly dressed, clean shaven, and exuding high spirits—a defiant image that continues to captivate both local and international media.
