Six Stolen Cars Destined for Zimbabwe Seized In Limpopo

Limpopo police have arrested six suspects and dealt a R9.6 million blow [$576,000] to cross-border syndicates in a joint operation with the SANDF and other agencies between September 21 and October 25.

The intelligence-driven crackdown targeted key routes, border areas and illegal crossing points along the N1 corridor, Musina, Tshamutumbu, Makhado, Malala Drift, Sandquest and routes towards the Limpopo River and Zimbabwean border.

Police recovered 10 stolen vehicles valued at R3.9 million [$234,000] that were allegedly destined for Zimbabwe, including a Haval H6, Ford Ranger, Toyota Fortuner, two Nissan Navaras, VW Polo, Subaru Outback, Suzuki Ertiga and Mercedes-Benz. Investigations found false plates, tampered VINs and removed engine numbers, a common method for organised vehicle smuggling syndicates.

Officers also seized 252 master boxes and 499 cartons of Remington Gold illicit cigarettes and 412 bottles of controlled medicines comprising Astrapain, Painagon and Stillpane, with the illicit goods valued at R5.7 million [$342,000].

The six suspects are expected to face charges including possession of suspected stolen vehicles and contraventions of customs and excise legislation. Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers said the operation significantly disrupted criminal networks and warned that Limpopo is not a safe haven for cross-border crime.
