Somalia’s Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has openly stated that U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar belongs to Somalia first. In remarks directed at Somali Americans, including those who support President Trump, Fiqi declared that Omar shares the same ethnicity, blood, and religion as the Somali people and is therefore “one of our own.”
He described her as “our sister” and urged the Somali diaspora in the United States to stand by her no matter their disagreements over American politics. Fiqi framed the current scrutiny of Omar as an attack based solely on her Somali origins rather than any actions she has taken as a member of Congress.
The statement comes days after federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C. home as part of an investigation into potential fraud in her family’s immigration paperwork. Fiqi dismissed that investigation as hostility aimed at her ethnicity and country of birth.
Omar has long presented herself as an American legislator while maintaining strong ties to Somalia. The Defense Minister’s public claim of ownership based on blood and faith makes clear that at least one foreign government views her loyalty as belonging to them.
