South African Communist Party Calls for Release Brian Mundubile, Bishop Trevor Mwamba and others
The Central Committee called for the immediate release of Bishop Trevor Mwamba, leader of Zambia’s United National Independence Party (UNIP), the party previously led by President Kenneth Kaunda.
His abduction and subsequent arrest at a police station in Matero, Lusaka, were only confirmed two days later, after his family and friends had frantically searched for him without any information about his whereabouts. His abduction took place in the aftermath of Presidential elections that have been widely disputed.
Bishop Mwamba is a retired Anglican Bishop who served in Botswana and is a respected theologian committed to peace and the advancement of justice. It is with great shock and concern that the SACP has learnt of his arbitrary arrest, which we regard as a serious violation of human rights and the principles of justice.
The SACP calls for his immediate release and urges the Zambian authorities to uphold democratic principles, human rights, international law and principles that guide SADC elections.
