South Sudan president puts both sons in key power jobs
President Salva Kiir has appointed his 36-year-old son, Major General Atem Salva Kiir, as commander of the Presidential Guard the elite Tiger Division that protects him.
This comes after he already placed another son, Thiik Salva Kiir Mayardit, as Deputy Executive Director in the Presidency in 2021.
One son now sits inside the president’s office. The other now commands the force that guards it.
The army says Atem’s appointment went through normal military channels and was based on merit. Critics see it as Kiir tightening family control ahead of elections later this year.
