STATE HOUSE RULES OUT COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO 2026 GENERAL ELECTION GRIEVANCES

By Nelson Zulu

State House has ruled out the establishment of a commission of inquiry to address alleged political tensions and grievances arising from the 2026 general election.

State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka says setting up such a commission would place an unnecessary financial burden on government, as it would require significant resources to facilitate its operations.

Mr. Hamasaka explains that commissions of inquiry incur costs related to allowances, venues and other administrative requirements, which he says must be justified by the issues under investigation.

His remarks follow a call last week by a Consortium of civil society, religious and academic institutions for government to address grievances arising from the 2026 general election in an honest, inclusive and nonpartisan manner.

The Consortium proposed a tribunal, commission or an inquiry modelled on a truth and reconciliation commission to promote national unity and reconciliation.

However, in an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Hamasaka dismissed the need for a commission of inquiry, describing the issues raised by the stakeholders as non-issues that are not in the national interest.
