Tanzania has announced the discovery of an estimated 223 billion cubic feet of natural gas reserves in the Mnazi Bay area in the southern Mtwara Region.

Energy Minister Dr. Juma Homera confirmed the find today, describing it as a significant addition to the country’s energy resources. The discovery follows the successful drilling of three wells two development wells and one exploration well carried out by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) in partnership with French operator Maurel & Prom (M&P).

This marks Tanzania’s first major gas discovery in more than a decade and is expected to boost the nation’s existing natural gas reserves, currently estimated at 57.54 trillion cubic feet.

Officials say the new reserves will help strengthen domestic energy supply, support power generation, and open further opportunities for industrial use and investment in the sector. Production from related wells in the Mnazi Bay field is already ramping up, with the broader development expected to contribute to national energy security.

The government had indicated last week that the exact volume would be disclosed during the official commissionng of the wells in Msimbati Village.
