Ted Cruz isn’t hiding it anymore. He wants the job, and he’s saying so out loud.
“It’s no secret that I want to be president,” Cruz said, as speculation grows that he’s laying groundwork for a 2028 run. Asked directly about it Thursday, Trump didn’t shut the door either. “I think he might do that. Yeah, he’s a very talented guy,” Trump said.
Cruz has run once before, finishing runner-up to Trump in the 2016 primary. He’s kept a high profile in the years since, chairing the Senate Commerce Committee and positioning himself as a hawkish, pro-Israel voice within the party. In recent months, he’s leaned into a public feud with Tucker Carlson over the direction of the GOP’s foreign policy, putting him at odds with the isolationist wing of the party that Vice President JD Vance is closely aligned with.
None of that changes the basic math heading into 2028. Vance leads early polling for the nomination by a wide margin, and Trump has been quietly funneling fundraising support his way.
Cruz saying the quiet part out loud doesn’t make the path any easier. It just means everyone can stop pretending they don’t already know.
