TENSIONS RISE BETWEEN TURKEY AND ISRAEL IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA
Israeli public broadcaster Kan News has reported increased friction between Turkish and Israeli naval forces in the Mediterranean, alleging that Turkish warships have been carrying out provocative maneuvers near vessels of the Israeli Navy.
According to the report, Turkish naval vessels have repeatedly approached Israeli warships, challenged their movements, and at times attempted to influence or obstruct their routes through the Mediterranean.
Roy Sharon, Kan News’ military and security correspondent, said Turkish warships sometimes move ahead of Israeli vessels and indicate the maritime direction they expect them to follow.
“Sometimes, with just a gesture, they divert them from their route,” Sharon said. “At other times, when they spot Israeli Navy ships, they demonstrate their power and speed at sea in what appears to be a show of force.”
The reported encounters come amid rapidly growing tensions between Turkey and Israel in recent months. Relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv have deteriorated sharply, with Israeli officials increasingly portraying Turkey as a potential security challenge to Israeli strategic interests.
The latest reports highlight the growing risk of direct military friction between the two regional powers, whose forces and strategic interests increasingly overlap across the Eastern Mediterranean and other parts of the Middle East.
While the reported naval encounters have not yet developed into an open military confrontation, the increasingly assertive movements of Turkish and Israeli warships underscore the heightened tensions and the potential for a dangerous incident at sea.
