The Thabo Mbeki Foundation has today published a new monograph: The United States of America and the Future of the Afrikaners in South Africa.

Last year South Africans woke to the news that the President of the United States had accused our country of seizing Afrikaner farms and, a few months later, of genocide. Delegations of our fellow citizens had travelled to Washington to ask for exactly this kind of pressure on their own government.

This monograph asks how that happened, and what it means for the future of all South Africans, Afrikaners included.

It looks at how the United States has dealt with the legacy of slavery, from forty acres and a mule in 1865 to Donald Trump’s Platinum Plan for Black Economic Empowerment in 2020. The monograph looks at the real condition of the Afrikaner people since 1994, drawing on Afrikaner scholars, economists and journalists. It records what was done at the negotiating table to address white fears.

It ends with a story about General Constand Viljoen and a lesson he was taught as a boy: do not start a fire unless you are sure you can put it out.
