THE BLACK BOX THAT WON’T SPEAK: WHY WICKNELL CHIVAYO’S HEADLESS BURIAL STILL HAUNTS ZIMBABWE

A month after a Bell 430 helicopter fell out of a cloudy sky at Kudenga Farm and killed tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo, Zimbabwe is still waiting to hear what the dead were trying to say in their final minutes – and still arguing about what was left of their bodies.

The Cockpit Voice and Flight Data Recorder – the black box – was recovered intact on October 1, less than 24 hours after the crash. The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe said it was central. It would tell investigators altitude, speed, engine performance, weather, and the last radio calls.

That was supposed to be followed by a preliminary report within 30 days, by October 30. As of this week, CAAZ has not published it.

In that official silence, the fire of conspiracy has grown. It was stoked further by what the family had to announce before burial.

“Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy “Lulu” Muteke will be buried without their heads,” family spokesman Herbert Chivayo made the announcement on October 5 at Glen Forest Cemetery, where the couple would later be buried side-by-side on October 8.

On the ground, CAAZ Director-General George Mashababe’s first assessment was clinical: tail struck first, aircraft rolled about 100 meters, fuel spilled, grass burned.

But what was said in the air has been more potent

Chivayo was flying in formation. In the lead helicopter was security aide Foster Chisi. His account, now part of the CAAZ docket, is the only public transcript:

The second helicopter warned of deteriorating weather and proposed a reroute via Bromley.

Chivayo’s pilots responded: “In bad weather, unable to exit cloud.”

Over Surrey, near Marondera, they reported they were still in cloud.

When Chisi told them they were ten minutes from Marondera, one pilot replied: “Which destination?”

Then comms lost.

That single question – “Which destination?” – is now a Rorschach test.

For aviation experts, it sounds like classic spatial disorientation in bad weather conditions.

For conspiracy theorists, the missing heads have become proof of something darker.

Activist Rutendo Matinyarare, chair of the Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Movement, posted that the eyes could give access to vaults, safes and bunkers where loot was hidden. The claim went viral.

In Washington, biometrics engineer Lucas Snyder had to publicly dismiss it: biometric systems that rely on facial recognition or iris scans cannot work with a dead, burnt head, he told Mopane News.

CAAZ has not addressed the missing heads directly, only that “no evidence presented publicly linking the missing heads to any theft or deliberate removal” exists and that the condition was due to high-impact and fire.

But without the black box audio, the denial sounds hollow to many.

Some, like Tabeth Rwodzi, an ardent Mopane News follower, say the silence by the government on the issue of the black box is not going to douse the speculation and conspiracy theories.

“The black box will not tell us what happened to Lulu and Chivayo’s heads. We need answers as a nation because in other countries the death of someone like Chivayo would have affected the stock exchange,” he said, adding that the truth needs to come out to dismiss speculation that Chivayo was working with President Mnangagwa in shady deals.

Minister of Transport Felix Mhona told Cabinet on October 6 that a full Annex 13 investigation had been instituted and that “international experts were being consulted.”

What remains is a small orange box in a hangar at Charles Prince Airport, holding two voices – perhaps calm, perhaps panicked – that could explain why a helicopter that took off at 4:20pm from Gandami village never made it to Harare, why five people burned until the fire died on its own, and why two of them were buried at 2pm at Glen Forest without their heads.
