THE SAMSON OPTION: IF ISRAEL FALLS, NO ONE IS SAFE
The “Samson Option” is one of the most controversial and frightening concepts associated with Israel’s alleged nuclear strategy.
The term was popularised by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh in his 1991 book The Samson Option, describing the idea of Israel potentially resorting to devastating nuclear retaliation if it faced an existential threat.
But the story goes deeper.

These were no ordinary politicians. They helped shape the Israeli state, its military establishment and its national security strategy during the formative years of the country.
Israel has never officially confirmed the existence of a “Samson Option” and maintains a policy of nuclear ambiguity.
Yet the concept remains deeply controversial: the idea that a state facing an existential threat could consider catastrophic retaliation rather than surrender.
The name itself comes from the biblical Samson, who brought down a temple upon himself and his enemies.
THE QUESTION IS NOT WHETHER NUCLEAR WAR WOULD HAVE WINNERS. IT WOULDN’T.
The real danger is what happens when leaders believe there is nothing left to lose.
