BREAKING: RUSH FOR THE EXITS — The woman who gutted Trump’s Civil Rights Division is RESIGNING just as Democrats gain congressional subpoena power.

The first rat is leaving the sinking ship that is the Trump administration..

Harmeet Dhillon, the Trump loyalist who decimated the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, resigned on Thursday, according to Attorney General Todd Blanche. Her departure is the first Justice Department shake-up since Tuesday’s Democratic rout in the midterm elections.

Dhillon is leaving behind a division that looks very little like the one she took over. In her roughly 18 months in charge, hundreds of career staffers left, including more than half of the division’s attorneys. The Civil Rights Division was built to protect minorities and the most vulnerable Americans from discrimination. Under Dhillon, it was turned into an arm of Trump’s culture war.

She sent attorneys to prosecute noncitizens accused of voting, to expand gun rights and to go after what Trump and his allies call “anti-Christian bias” and Democrats’ “woke ideology.” Of course, her reallocation of priorities meant fewer resources for the division’s historic mission of fighting discrimination.

Dhillon wasn’t embarrassed by the exodus. “I think that’s fine,” she said on a podcast about the mass departures. She said she didn’t want people “who feel like it’s their pet project to go persecute police departments based on statistical evidence.” She added: “The job here is to enforce the federal civil rights laws, not woke ideology.”

Blanche praised her for leading the division “with conviction” and claimed she “defended the civil liberties of every American and enforced the law without fear or favor.” That’s a strange description of someone who emptied out the office responsible for defending those civil liberties.

Dhillon’s resignation letter says she told White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles back in early October that she planned to leave. That may be true. But the resignation still landed two days after voters handed Democrats subpoena power and the authority to investigate how Trump’s Justice Department has been run.

There’s plenty to investigate. Trump’s DOJ has charged James Comey three times. A grand jury refused to indict Cassidy Hutchinson. A judge threw out charges against two former FBI officials and called the case “weaponization.” Armed federal agents went door to door asking people whether they had voted. And the Supreme Court shot down the department’s last-minute attempt to set aside 20,000 California ballots. Dhillon’s division was in the middle of the push to prosecute noncitizen voters.

Dhillon says she “will continue fighting for our country in the years ahead.” We’ll see whether that fighting includes answering questions from Congress under oath, which her resignation will not protect her from.

With a new majority-Democratic Congress coming, Trump’s minions are starting to head for the exits. It can’t happen soon enough!
