TOORO’S NEW KING EDWARD KIJANANGOMA CALLS FOR PEACE, PUTS KINGDOM IN GOD’S HANDS
Fresh video footage circulating online has captured Tooro Kingdom’s newly declared King, Rukirabasaija Edward Rukidi Nabwongo I, making his first public communication following his selection by the Babiito royal clan.
Speaking to a gathering of royals and subjects at the home of Mzee Isaiah Kalya in Buheesi, the new Omukama called for peace, unity and God’s guidance as the kingdom moves into a new chapter.
“For now, everything is done and it ended peacefully. I thank God, and we shall put ourselves in God’s hands. Everything we do for our kingdom, we need to dedicate it to God,” Edward said.
Edward’s remarks come at a time when Tooro remains gripped by a succession debate following the death of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, 2026, aged 34.
The 56-year-old former UBC news anchor and cousin of the late King was selected by the Babiito clan council on September 9, reportedly receiving 19 of the 21 votes.
However, his selection has faced opposition from members of Oyo’s immediate family, including his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, and sister Princess Ruth Komuntale, who have cited the late King’s will and its provisions regarding his successor.
Edward’s declaration came as the late King Oyo was being laid to rest on September 12, further intensifying public debate over the future of the ancient kingdom.
Despite the controversy, Edward has begun taking part in traditional royal activities while calling for unity, peace, service to the people and the promotion of Tooro’s tourism and development.
His latest message appears to signal a desire to move beyond the succession dispute and focus on the kingdom’s future under his leadership.
