The Trump administration just delivered a clear message to the socialist government in Brazil: America still stands with its allies when left-wing judges and politicians try to crush the opposition. Marco Rubio’s State Department announced it will issue U.S. visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family, allowing them to enter the United States after Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered their passports seized and canceled.
Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and the right-wing candidate who just lost Sunday’s presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering. He denies the charges. Within 24 hours of the election, Moraes — the same justice who has long targeted the Bolsonaro family — moved to strip his ability to leave the country. Brazilian authorities canceled his passports after he failed to surrender them on the court’s timeline.
President Trump called the election process into question, stating it “looked like another rigged election, frankly” and that “elections have to be indisputable.” Flávio Bolsonaro himself rejected the results, pointing to a last-minute decision by a Lula-appointed Supreme Court justice to extend voting hours. His party later acknowledged the outcome, but the sequence of events fueled widespread conservative concerns about judicial interference in Brazil.
Instead of letting Lula’s allies lock another Bolsonaro behind bars or under house arrest, the Trump administration is offering Flávio, his wife, and their two daughters a path to American soil. A U.S. official confirmed the visas will be issued and entry allowed.
This is the right move. When leftist regimes in Latin America weaponize courts against conservative leaders, the United States under Trump is choosing to protect them rather than look the other way.
