Trump DOJ Charges 48 Foreign Nationals for Illegally Voting Across Five States
The Trump Justice Department just charged 48 foreign nationals with illegally registering and casting ballots in American elections. The cases span Nevada, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, and New York — including key battleground states where every vote counts.
Forty-seven of the accused are noncitizens who held lawful permanent resident status. One is an illegal alien: 73-year-old Cuban national Alfredo Santiesteban, charged with voting in the 2024 general election. Many of the others face charges for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to register, then voting in federal elections in 2022 and 2024. Some also lied on naturalization paperwork about never having voted or claimed to be citizens.
For years, Democrats and major media outlets insisted noncitizen voting was a myth that almost never occurs. Officials and commentators repeatedly told the public there was no evidence of it happening at any meaningful scale. These charges show it does happen. The defendants did not sneak past every safeguard by accident. They registered, claimed citizenship under oath in many cases, and cast ballots that canceled out the votes of eligible Americans.
The announcement is the latest in a series of DOJ actions under the current administration targeting illegal voting and fraudulent registration. Previous rounds have produced dozens of additional charges in other states.
Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections, regardless of immigration status. Each of these cases represents one more instance where that line was crossed.
Voters in the affected states will now see prosecutors move forward on specific individuals rather than abstract claims. The details include names, nationalities, and the elections involved. The cases make clear that the problem is not theoretical.-DTP
