THIS IS HILARIOUS: Trump just showered Mayor Mamdani with praise outside Gracie Mansion, calling him a mayor with great potential, months after calling him a communist.
Speaking to the press Monday, Trump said Mamdani was off to a great start as mayor.
“I’ve seen it with numerous different mayors, some great ones and some not so great ones,” Trump said. “So hopefully you’re going to be a great one.”
He kept going.
“I certainly hope he will be a great mayor,” Trump said. “I want him to be a great mayor, and he’s certainly got potential, got great potential.”
Read that again. This is the same Trump who’s called Mamdani a communist, and who recently ripped him for supposedly laughing during a 9/11 anniversary ceremony, an accusation that turned out to be false, since Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were actually just warmly greeting each other.
And it’s the same Trump Mamdani has called a fascist right back.
Yet somehow, face to face at Gracie Mansion, the two managed genuine warmth. Mamdani said their conversation focused on making it easier to afford life in New York City, a message Trump didn’t dismiss.
Trump even called Gracie Mansion a special place and described the visit as a bit of old home week.
Whatever the politics, Mamdani deserves credit here. He’s held his ground publicly against Trump’s attacks while still finding a way to sit across the table and advocate directly for New Yorkers’ affordability. That’s not an easy needle to thread, and he threaded it well.
