Trump Says Europe Should Repay U.S. for Earlier Ukraine Military Aid
U.S. President Donald Trump says European countries should reimburse Washington for military aid and ammunition that the United States previously provided to Ukraine.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that the Biden administration had supplied large quantities of ammunition to Ukraine and NATO allies without Europe being asked to cover the full cost. He said the United States would now seek payment, although he acknowledged that the request was coming later than it should have.
Trump’s comments come as Washington continues to focus on rebuilding and expanding its own ammunition stockpiles. He also indicated that U.S. weapons sales to allied countries could resume after American requirements are given priority.
The issue is particularly notable because the U.S. and NATO already have a mechanism under which European allies and Canada finance purchases of American-made weapons for Ukraine.
The comments could add another layer to ongoing discussions within NATO over burden-sharing, defense spending and the future cost of supporting Ukraine.
