Trump Says U.S. Will Block Rival Military Presence in Greenland

Following his announcement of what he described as a “lifetime” agreement involving Greenland, U.S. President Donald Trump said he does not want China, Russia or any other U.S. strategic rival to establish a military presence on the Arctic island.

“From now on, no adversary of the United States will EVER be able to have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our express written approval,” Trump said.

Trump’s comments underscore Washington’s focus on Greenland’s strategic importance in the Arctic, including its location between North America and Europe and its significance for defense, surveillance and emerging Arctic economic activity.

The precise legal status and scope of the reported agreement, including what authority the United States would have over foreign military activity or investments in Greenland, would require confirmation from Denmark and Greenland.
