TRUMP’S PUTIN DIESEL DEAL FACES PROSPECT OF CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION
Trump’s energy dealings could face investigations if Democrats win either congressional chamber, Axios reports.
Lawmakers are already preparing scrutiny of his Russian diesel agreement. A bipartisan group has demanded that banks, port authorities and fuel distributors preserve contracts, shipping records, payment information and communications with US officials concerning Russian diesel transactions.
Their challenge centers on the 2022 Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act. The lawmakers argue that Russian fuel imports remain prohibited unless statutory conditions are met—and that the administration has not fulfilled required congressional review obligations. Treasury maintains its actions comply with applicable law.
This is therefore a serious legal dispute, rather than an established court finding that the deal is unlawful.
For Ukraine, the stakes extend beyond Washington’s political battles. Restoring Russian fuel sales creates revenue opportunities for a state continuing its invasion. The lawmakers explicitly warned that the arrangement could finance Russia’s war.
An investigation could examine how the agreement was authorized, which companies participated and whether the administration followed the law.
Promises of cheaper diesel do not remove the need for accountability over a deal benefiting Putin’s Russia.
