The United States has dismissed as “fake news” South Africa’s suggestion that discussions were underway about possible U.S. participation in this weekend’s G20 summit in Johannesburg.
This firm denial comes just hours after President Cyril Ramaphosa said talks with Washington were ongoing.
Instead, the White House insists its position has not shifted: the U.S. will attend only Sunday’s handover ceremony and will not take part in any G20 deliberations.
