🟧 UKRAINE LIBERATED MORE TERRITORY THAN RUSSIA GAINED IN AUGUST
According to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainian forces liberated at least 129.81 square kilometers during August, while Russian forces seized or infiltrated approximately 123.53 square kilometers.
That means Ukraine emerged with a narrow territorial advantage despite confronting a much larger army in the middle of Russia’s own summer offensive.
This was not Ukraine’s first net-positive month of 2026—May also produced a territorial advantage—but that only strengthens the larger picture. After years dominated by defensive warfare, 2026 is increasingly becoming a year in which Ukraine is not merely holding its ground but taking Ukrainian territory back.
Ukraine says its forces have reclaimed 745 square kilometers and 26 settlements through the broader Oleksandrivka operation this year. Independent battlefield mapping has confirmed substantial Ukrainian advances across that sector, even if exact measurements continue to vary.
Russia attacked across multiple fronts, claimed to be advancing everywhere and sacrificed more than 42,000 personnel during August alone. Yet according to ISW, it still gained less ground than Ukraine liberated.
This was not a sweeping breakthrough. It was an extraordinary battlefield achievement: an outnumbered Ukrainian army absorbing Russia’s offensive, reversing advances in key sectors and demonstrating that Moscow’s occupation is neither permanent nor irreversible.
