UNITED STATES: Georgia Sergeant Killed Days After Arresting Suspect, Who Later Dies By Su-c!de
A white Georgia sergeant was killed four days after he arrested the same man who is now accused of shooting him in his patrol car.
Sgt. Chris Fisher of the Warm Springs Police Department had just finished an unrelated traffic stop near the Meriwether Country Inn around 11:57 p.m. on Sept. 1.
According to the GBI, a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pulled alongside his cruiser and the driver opened fire. Fisher, a husband and father of two, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The agency identified the suspect as 23-year-old Jimmie Lee Steverson of Warm Springs. Court records show Fisher had arrested Steverson around 1 a.m. on Aug. 28 on felony charges including marijuana possession, possession of a gun during the commission of a crime, and obstruction. Steverson posted bond and was released.
A Blue Alert was issued statewide. About 12 hours later, Anderson County deputies in South Carolina stopped a car on I-85. Steverson was a passenger. The GBI says he suffered a self-inflicted g*nshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and later died.
Warm Springs City Councilman Michael Bishop told 11Alive he believes the shooting was payback for the Friday arrest. Warm Springs is a small town in west Georgia.
The man Fisher had put in cuffs was back on the street in time to find him sitting in a parked patrol car.
