UPDATE on the funeral of Zambia’s Sixth President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
Why the delay?
What are the sticking or contentious issues?
● President Hakainde Hichilema dispatched Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Friday 6th June 2025. Mulambo Haimbe engaged in the talks with the family about the immediate repatriation of the mortal remains of President Edgar Lungu.
The talks immediately broke down when Haimbe gave an ultimatum that the body must, at all cost, be in Lusaka by Sunday 8th June 2025 to help begin the official mourning period.
● On Monday 9th June 2025, Haimbe was replaced by Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa and the former Vice President, Enoch Kavindele as leader of the delegation supported by former Secretary to Cabinet, Leslie Mbula. Now the two were hostile emvoys owing to their numerous public statements against the former President.
● Now members of the African Forum of Former Heads of State and Government, a prominent forum for former presidents and leaders in Africa, have joined in the crisis.

In times of deep sorrow and mourning, government authorities need to act with empathy and understanding. The loss of a prominent political figure, a family leader, or a community icon should prompt unity and shared humanity, allowing families and organizations like the Patriotic Front (PF) to honour their loved one and leader without unnecessary intervention. It is therefore reasonable to suggest that the government should step aside to let the family and PF conduct the burial with the dignity it deserves.
However, mourning does not exempt anyone from their legal obligations or accountability. As the Lungu family grieves and reflects, the adage “umulandu taubola”—justice does not expire—serves as a vital reminder. Once the mourning period has passed, any pending legal matters must proceed, ensuring that the rule of law is upheld and justice is served within the established legal framework.

It is regrettable that political opportunists are exploiting the death of former Sixth President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to promote their own malicious agendas. Individuals such as Emmanuel Mwamba, Raphael Nakachinda, and Fred M’membe are now vying to make statements on social media, and their comments are allegations intended to undermine and embarrass the government and President Hakainde Hichilema.
The unfounded remarks made by individuals and the PF regarding the death of former Sixth President Edgar Chagwa Lungu are driven by impulse and a lack of emotional intelligence. The turmoil surrounding the death of former Sixth President Edgar Chagwa Lungu will eventually subside, and all those who have made careless, regretful, and alarming statements will be held accountable.
Many have expressed numerous negative opinions about the government, forgetting that former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu publicly returned to active politics, prompting the government to withdraw his entitlements as per the Constitution. People should respond more fairly to the death of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Uncontrolled emotions and impulses can lead individuals into trouble, and in the future, they will have to live with the allegations they have made. Instead, there is a competition to spread falsehoods and propaganda, which is unfortunate, as opposition political parties are using the death of Edgar Chagwa Lungu to garner sympathy and portray the UPND government negatively. What they must understand is that the public is observing; we need to be patriotic, as falsehoods will not alter the narrative.
On the other hand, the passing of former Sixth President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is a tragic event and a significant loss for the nation. It is important for people to grieve him thoughtfully and entrust everything to God Almighty, who understands far more than we do as mere mortals. The negative comments directed at the government are unhelpful and are only adding to the distresses and emotional sufferings of the grieving family.
The PF has seen this funeral as a weapon to fight & frustrate the government through the former president’s family. This approach has eroded the gravity of the funeral & has instead turned it into a circus, which is very unfortunate.
Through this needless tag-of-war, expenses are piling up. The funeral home in South Africa will soon be laughing its way to the bank.
