UPND SUPPORTERS WANT LUNGU’S HISTORY ERASED BECAUSE HE IS A PRIVATE CITIZEN
Some supporters of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) have called for Government to suspend public activities intended to honour Zambia’s sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, arguing that his family requested that he be treated as a private citizen.
The supporters argue that since the Lungu family requested privacy regarding the former President’s burial, Government should respect that position by suspending initiatives aimed at publicly honouring him.
They maintain that Government should only reconsider such activities once the outstanding matters surrounding his burial have been resolved.
However, supporters of the late President have strongly condemned the position, accusing those advancing such arguments of attempting to erase Edgar Lungu’s legacy from Zambia’s political history.
They argue that requesting privacy during burial arrangements does not change the fact that Edgar Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth Republican President.
According to Lungu’s supporters, political differences and disagreements surrounding his burial should not be used as justification for denying him recognition as a former Head of State.
They insist that regardless of the circumstances surrounding his death and burial, Edgar Chagwa Lungu remains part of Zambia’s history, which cannot be erased.
Meanwhile, Government has suspended plans to erect a statue of the late President in Ndola until outstanding matters surrounding his burial are resolved.
According to the Secretary to the Cabinet, the proposed statue will remain on hold until the burial dispute is settled.
