US$1.5 BILLION US HEALTH DEAL: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PROMISE?
So, Zambia is now ready to sign a US$1.5 billion health deal with the United States after negotiating out some of the conditions.
Fair enough. But Zambians have a right to ask:
Was the earlier promise that Zambia would NOT enter into a health aid deal with the American government just a campaign slogan?
If the position has changed, say so openly.
If the Government has successfully negotiated a better agreement, tell Zambians exactly what was removed, what remains, and what Zambia has committed itself to.
We cannot have one message during campaigns and another message once in government
US$1.5 billion is serious money. The health of millions of Zambians is even more serious.
Government must not hide behind technical language. Explain the deal. Explain the U-turn. Explain what changed.
Zambians deserve more than political slogans.
Campaign promises must be accountable to the decisions made in government.
