USA EMBASSY EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER MEDIA FREEDOM V!OLATIONS IN ZAMBIA

The US Embassy in Zambia has raised concerns about media freedom v!olations in the country, highlighting the crucial role of a free press in democracy.

Speaking at the 3rd Media Owners Association of Zambia (MOAZ) conference in Lusaka on October 3, 2024, US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Linnisa Wahid emphasized the importance of media freedom, citing Thomas Jefferson’s 1787 statement that he would prefer “newspapers without a government” over “a government without newspapers”.

Wahid commended Zambian media outlets for dedicating resources to report on critical issues, including the energy crisis, drought, and food crisis.

She also acknowledged the media’s role in providing a platform for diverse voices and fostering civic engagement.

Wahid who commended President Hakainde Hichilema for strides made in increasing an enabling environment for the media, however, noted that media freedom is not static and requires continuous vigilance.

She expressed concern over intimidation of journalists, harassment of community radio stations, and arrests of journalists and media houses for criticizing the government.

The 2023 Freedom of Expression Report revealed that 26% of journalists feel restricted in their reporting, and 18.7% have experienced harassment on duty.

Wahid reiterated the need for media organizations to address energy security and artificial intelligence challenges to ensure long-term sustainability. She also highlighted the importance of respecting digital rights to protect privacy, freedom of expression, and digital inclusion.

In response, Justice Minister Princess Kasune disputed the report on media intimidation and harassment of journalists, stating that Zambia has made significant progress in ensuring media freedoms under the UPND government.

She questioned the report’s authorship, intentions, and target audience.

Speaking earlier, Teldah Mawarire USAID Open Spaces Zambia project Chief of Party said the US government, through USAID, supports free and independent media in Zambia through the Open Spaces program, partnering with organizations like MISA Zambia and Bloggers of Zambia. She said the program provides equipment, training, and business support to 19 community and national radio stations.
