VANCE REACHES OUT TO IRAN HARD-LINER AS NUCLEAR DEADLINE LOOMS

Vice President JD Vance has sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a longtime Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander, offering to meet face-to-face to discuss ending the current conflict.

The proposed talks could take place in Doha or Istanbul. Washington’s core requirement remains that Iran not obtain a nuclear weapon. Tehran continues to insist that any discussion begin with the lifting of naval restrictions and oil sanctions so the regime can stabilize its economy.

The two sides remain far apart on sequencing. U.S. officials want the nuclear question settled first. Iranian representatives want sanctions relief first. Qatari mediators have returned to Tehran, but no agreement has emerged. Iran has confirmed it received Vance’s letter and has not yet replied.

President Trump has described the contact as focused on medical supplies rather than formal peace negotiations, though multiple reports indicate the letter was intended to test whether a framework for talks exists before any further military decisions.

The outreach occurs as the administration continues to evaluate options after the midterms. Rezaei, viewed inside Iran as a hard-line figure with access to the Supreme Leader, is treated by some U.S. assessments as one of the few officials who could potentially deliver regime approval for any deal.

The exchange leaves the central American demand unchanged: verifiable steps to prevent an Iranian nuclear weapon. Without movement on that point, the gap between the two positions remains the same as it was before the letter was sent.
