Venezuela’s Nobel Peace Prize Winner Maria Corina Machado Returns Home After Nearly a Year Abroad
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has returned to the country after nearly a year abroad, receiving a warm welcome from supporters as she appeared at a church in Lara state on Sunday.
Machado secretly left Venezuela in late 2025 to receive the Nobel Peace Prize after spending more than a year largely in hiding under the government of former president Nicolas Maduro.
Her return could intensify pressure on interim President Delcy Rodriguez as opposition figures push for free and fair elections. Machado has pledged to work toward securing an election date, although it remains unclear when Venezuela will hold its next presidential vote.
Machado’s return marks a significant moment for Venezuela’s opposition as the country navigates a politically uncertain transition.
