VICE PRESIDENT NALUMANGO TAKES OATH AS MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, OTHER MPS FOLLOW SUIT

LUSAKA, Zambia— Her Honour the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. W.K. Mutale Nalumango, has been sworn in as a Member of Parliament this morning in a ceremony held in the National Assembly chambers.

Dr. Nalumango took the Oath of Office and the Oath of Allegiance at exactly 09:00 hours before Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs. Nelly Mutiti Mutti.

Immediately after the Vice President, other 112 Members of Parliament followed suit and took their oaths, paving the way for full participation in the business of the House. The rest will be sworn-in tomorrow September 8, 2026.

The swearing-in is a constitutional requirement under Article 260 of the Constitution of Zambia. No Member of Parliament can debate, vote, or serve on committees until they have taken the oath.

As Vice President, Dr. Nalumango retains her seat in Parliament ex-officio. The oath therefore, formally enables her to participate in parliamentary proceedings, including presenting government business, responding to questions, and voting on legislation while executing her executive duties.

The National Assembly is expected to commence with its scheduled business following the completion of the oath-taking exercise for all MPs.
