We baked cannabis cupcakes to raise money for school food, twins tell DEC
THE twins who are accused of trafficking in cannabis-laced cupcakes, allegedly told Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officers that they started baking the cakes to raise money for food while at school.

DEC assistant investigations officer Percy Milambo testified before Magistrate Fines Muyamba this morning that the accused, Blessings Kaonga and Gift Kaonga, explained that they had ventured into baking because they were struggling to meet their food needs.
Milambo, who has served the DEC in Lusaka for 19 years, told the court that the explanation was given when officers visited the boarding house where the sisters were staying in New Kasama on September 25, 2026.

“I was on duty when I received information from a reliable source that people in the area were in possession of drugs,” he said.
He said the team proceeded to the boarding house, knocked on the door, introduced themselves to the occupants and explained the purpose of their visit.

Milambo testified that the team leader asked the occupants to declare any illegal substances or drugs on the premises, after which Blessings allegedly disclosed that there were cannabis-laced cupcakes in one of the bedrooms.

He told the court that Blessings handed over a grey dish containing 26 suspected cannabis-laced cupcakes, which he produced as evidence.
The witness said officers obtained a search warrant for the bedroom and conducted a search but found nothing else of interest apart from the cupcakes.

“During the conversation, the suspect Blessings told the officers that she bakes together with her sister Gift and they were taught how to bake by one of their colleagues,” he said.
According to Milambo, the sisters said they wanted to make money to help meet their food needs while at school.
He said the two were apprehended on the same day and taken into custody as investigations continued.

The matter was adjourned to Monday, October 19, 2026, and the two accused, one of them a Manchester City fan will remain in custody.
Blessings and Gift are charged with trafficking in psychotropic substances involving 26 cupcakes allegedly containing cannabis weighing 520.52 grammes, with a reported tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of 0.72 per cent.

The sisters previously pleaded not guilty to the charge and remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
