“WE WILL WIPE MOSCOW OFF THE MAP”  BELGIAN DEFENCE MINISTER ISSUES STARK WARNING TO RUSSIA

Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken has issued a strong warning to Russia, saying Moscow would face a massive military response if it launched a conventional missile attack against Brussels, according to reports about an interview with Belgian newspaper De Morgen.

Asked whether he feared Russian President Vladimir Putin might target the Belgian capital with a conventional missile, Francken reportedly replied:

💬 “No, because then he would be striking at the heart of NATO, and we would wipe Moscow off the map.”

The minister’s remarks were framed as a warning about NATO’s collective defence commitments under Article 5 of the alliance’s founding treaty. Under this principle, an armed attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against all, although each ally determines what action it considers necessary in response.

Francken said he did not consider a direct Russian attack on a NATO capital likely. However, he expressed concern about threats in the so-called grey zone, including sabotage, cyberattacks and other forms of hybrid warfare.

He also warned European countries against underestimating Russia’s military-industrial capacity, calling for faster investment in defence and stronger European military preparedness.

The remarks reportedly drew criticism from the Russian Embassy in Belgium, which described them as provocative and irresponsible. Francken subsequently argued that his comments had been taken partly out of context, reiterating that NATO is a defensive alliance whose purpose is to prevent war through deterrence.

⚠️ Important clarification: The phrase “wipe Moscow off the map” is a statement attributed to the Belgian defence minister, not an announcement of an actual military operation. Article 5 also does not automatically require every NATO member to respond with the same military action.

🌍 What do you think? Do such strong warnings help deter a potential Russian attack, or could they further escalate tensions between NATO and Moscow?
