Why I’m very positive that Simon Mwewa Chitambala will succeed with his “Make Lusaka Clean” campaign.

First of all, he has started the campaign much earlier compared to those who came before him and attempted to tackle the same problem.

Secondly, he has remained consistent in his resolve to make Lusaka clean. For him, it is non-negotiable. Whether you hate him or support him, he is determined to do what he promised without compromise.

Probably the first politician to not care wether people like him or not, as long as he is  doing his job the best  way he knows how.

He is also less of an office person and more of a field worker, which is exactly what Lusaka needs right now. Making Lusaka clean is a problem that cannot be solved by sitting behind a desk and issuing instructions. It needs someone willing to get into the streets, see the situation firsthand and take action. He is a perfect fit.

But the most important factor, in my view, is that he has the support of the Central Government and, more importantly, the people who voted for him. He knew right from the start that no one can manage this task by working in isolation with the central government. He made that very clear, in his decision to never go independent if the UPND didn’t addopt him,  but support whoever the party picked.

Without beating by the bush, Mr. Mwewa also  campaigned on a clear resolve to move street vendors into designated markets as one of the first steps towards making Lusaka clean and orderly. Those who voted for him did so with a clear understanding of what his mandate meant.

He made it categorically clear during the campaigns what he intended to do if the people of Lusaka gave him the mandate to be their Mayor. Now that he is in office, nobody can honestly claim that they were not warned.

This is important because the street vendors themselves have been  psychologically prepared for this exercise long before it started.

I therefore expect less resistance than we have seen in previous attempts, provided the process is handled fairly, firmly and humanely.

Mr. Mwewa Television , your leadership is quite alright, and yes, I voted for you.

Now, go on and make Lusaka clean. We are watching, and we are rooting for you.
