Why Trump Is Targeting Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain, and Would a Strike Be Worth the Risk?

Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain has emerged as a major strategic concern for Washington because of its deeply buried underground tunnel complex near the Natanz nuclear facility.

The facility, located beneath a heavily fortified granite mountain, is believed to have the potential to support sensitive nuclear activities, including uranium enrichment or centrifuge-related operations. However, there is no independently verified evidence that enrichment is currently taking place inside the complex.

For President Donald Trump, the strategic concern is that Iran could preserve or rebuild critical parts of its nuclear program in a location that is extremely difficult to destroy through conventional airstrikes.

The United States possesses powerful weapons, including the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, but experts warn that even these bunker-busting bombs may not be capable of destroying the entire underground facility.

A strike could instead focus on damaging tunnel entrances, ventilation systems and external support infrastructure, potentially leaving the complex unusable without eliminating everything buried inside.

But would such an operation be worth the risk?

A successful strike could delay Iran’s nuclear activities and demonstrate US military reach. However, it would not necessarily eliminate Iran’s nuclear expertise, materials or ability to rebuild elsewhere.

The consequences could also extend far beyond the mountain, with potential Iranian retaliation against US military bases, Gulf energy infrastructure and strategic shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz.

Satellite analysis published in October 2026 indicates that Pickaxe Mountain’s tunnel entrances remain blocked and that the facility may not currently be operational.

The central dilemma for Washington is whether a military strike would deliver a lasting reduction in Iran’s nuclear capabilities or simply trigger another round of regional escalation without permanently resolving the nuclear threat.
