A preliminary report into the helicopter crash that killed controversial businessman Wicknell Chivhayo, his wife and three others is expected within 30 days, ministers said on Tuesday.

The Bell 430 helicopter, registered in Zimbabwe as Z-PED and operated by Sky Helicopters Private Limited, crashed in misty conditions at Kudenga Farm in Mashonaland East on September 30 while flying from Gandami in Chikomba district to Marondera.

Chivayo, his wife Lucy, security officer Senelisiwe Magagula and two pilots Calvin Soda and Courage Mutavira perished in the crash.

Information minister Zhemu Soda, speaking after a cabinet meeting, said a full investigation had been instituted in line with the Convention on International Civil Aviation and the Civil Aviation Act.

He said preliminary investigations at the crash site had been completed and the wreckage had been recovered to Charles Prince Airport “to allow for detailed forensic examination including by international experts.”

Soda said the preliminary report would examine the wreckage, weather conditions, maintenance records and records relating to the operator and crew.

“The government advises that a preliminary report will be expected in 30 days of the accident, in line with international investigation standards,” the minister said.

“Further updates will be given as the nation mourns together with the bereaved families on this tragic and sad loss.”

Chivayo and Lucy will be buried side-by-side at Glen Forest Memorial in Harare on Thursday.
