ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE SHARE ‘UMBILICAL CORD OF BROTHERHOOD’ – IG

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba has emphasized the deep historical ties between Zambia and Zimbabwe, referring to the two countries as sharing a “historical umbilical cord of brotherhood.” He stressed the importance of harmonious coexistence despite geographical boundaries.

Mr. Musamba made these remarks today, October 8, 2024, when a delegation from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland West Province Women’s Network Chapter, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Plaxedes Mbira, paid a courtesy call on him at his office.

The Police chief commended the ZRP Women’s Network Chapter for visiting the Freedom Camp and Mulungushi Shrines, where the remains of freedom fighters rest. He noted the significance of the interaction between the Women’s Networks of Zimbabwe and the Zambia Police, which provides a platform for exchanging ideas and collaborating on various programs.

“Zimbabwe and Zambia are one people, separated only by geographical boundaries. The fact that the remains of your fallen heroes and heroines from the liberation struggle rest on Zambian soil speaks volumes about the brotherhood and friendship we share,” said Mr. Musamba.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner Mbira, responsible for operations in Mashonaland West Police Province, expressed gratitude for the warm reception. She highlighted her team’s eagerness to learn from and share experiences with their Zambian counterparts, particularly in efforts to combat cross-border crimes, organised crimes, transnational crimes, and gender-based violence (GBV).

“Though our primary mission in Zambia is to visit the shrines where our freedom fighters are buried, it is equally important for us, as a Women’s Network, to strengthen bilateral ties and enhance cooperation with our Zambian Police counterparts in tackling the menace of transnational crimes,” said Assistant Commissioner Mbira.

The visiting Zimbabwean Police officers will also engage in social and sporting activities, fostering a relaxed atmosphere to exchange ideas with their Zambian counterparts. By press time, they had already visited the Freedom Camp memorial site at Chikumbi in Ngwerere area and were en route to Mkushi via Kabwe in Central Province.
