President Hakainde Hichilema has launched the US$1.6 billion second-phase expansion of United Capital Fertilizer’s ammonia and urea plant in Chilanga, a major investment expected to position Zambia as home to Africa’s second-largest fertiliser production facility.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Hichilema said the plant had already created 7,400 direct jobs, with employment projected to reach 10,000 following the expansion.

The President described domestic fertiliser production as central to Zambia’s agricultural transformation, citing government targets of 10 million tonnes of maize, three million tonnes of soya beans and one million tonnes each of wheat and sugar.

β€œNone of this is achievable without a reliable supply of affordable fertiliser, made in Zambia,” Hichilema said.

He added that United Capital Fertilizer had become a net exporter to regional markets, generating foreign exchange while strengthening Zambia’s agricultural supply chain.

The investment is expected to expand local production of D Compound and urea fertilisers, reducing dependence on imports and supporting farmers’ access to essential agricultural inputs.

Hichilema urged investors to prioritise productive industries capable of generating employment and sustaining economic growth.

β€œSeek ye first accelerated economic growth through investment and trade, and all things will be added,” he said.

The expansion marks another step in Zambia’s ambition to become a regional fertiliser manufacturing and export hub, although its full economic impact will depend on completion, production costs and the affordability of fertiliser for local farmers.
