ZAMBIA SECURES SEAT ON UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL FOR 2027–2029 TERM

Zambia has secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic engagement and commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.

The election took place during the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe has welcomed the development, describing it as an opportunity for Zambia to play a greater role in shaping the global human rights agenda.

Mr. Haimbe said the election underscores Zambia’s commitment to promoting human dignity, equality, justice, democracy and the rule of law.

He attributed the country’s progress to various reforms undertaken by the government, including the abolition of the death penalty, strengthened legal protections for women, children and persons with disabilities, as well as expanded access to education and social protection programmes.

The Minister said Zambia would use its three-year tenure to champion the rights of vulnerable populations while promoting dialogue, international cooperation and consensus-building among member states.

He reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to working with the international community to advance human rights, strengthen democratic institutions and promote sustainable peace and development.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide, addressing violations and making recommendations to member states.
