“Today, as we all know, there was this threat against the entire people of Iran, and this is truly unacceptable,” the pope told reporters in Italian. “There are certainly issues of international law here, but even more, it is a moral question concerning the good of the people as a whole, in its entirety.”
His remarks come in the wake of Trump’s Easter threat to bomb Iran’s civilian infrastructure, a threat which escalated this morning to a vow that their “whole civilization will die tonight” unless they do as he says. The American President is threatening nuclear holocaust.
The pope went on in English to ask “all people of goodwill to search, always for peace and not violence. To reject war, especially a war which many people have said is an unjust war, which is continuing to escalate and which is not resolving anything.”
“I would invite the citizens of all the countries involved to contact the authorities, political leaders, congressmen, to ask them — tell them to work for peace and to reject war always,” he continued.
This call for direct democratic engagement on the part of the American people regarding the Iran War is a marked escalation on Leo’s part. There are roughly 53 million Catholic adults in the United States. If they flood their elected officials with calls, it will heavily move the needle.
The pope cited the “worldwide economic crisis, energy crisis” and the “great instability” in the Middle East as “provoking more hatred throughout the world.
“Attacks on civilian infrastructure is against international law … it is also a sign of the hatred, the division, the destruction that the human being is capable of,” Leo said.
This is the kind moral leadership that the world is starving for right now. The United States has lost its leadership role on the world stage because the president has crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed. He has his finger on the nuclear button and 93 million Iranians in his sights. Even if he does back down — and we fervently pray that he will — we must hold him accountable. This man and everyone who enabled him must be prosecuted and imprisoned for life. War criminals belong behind bars.
