TONSE ALLIANCE DEMANDS URGENT ECZ MEETING OVER CONTROVERSIAL ELECTORAL BILL AHEAD OF 2026 ELECTIONS.

Lusaka – Wednesday, 8 April 2026

The TONSE Alliance has formally requested an urgent meeting with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) amid serious concerns about the proposed Electoral Process Bill and the country’s electoral roadmap ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a letter dated 7th April and addressed to Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro, Alliance Secretary General Dr Chris Zumani Zimba said the request reflects growing unease among its member organizations over key aspects of the bill currently under consideration as well as broader preparations for the polls.

Dr Zimba said as key stakeholders in Zambia’s democratic system, the alliance believes it is both necessary and responsible to engage directly with the Commission on issues that have significant implications for the credibility, transparency and integrity of elections.

He noted that the provisions in the proposed law raise questions that require clarity, consultation and consensus building in order to maintain public trust.

Dr Zimba said the request for talks is made in the spirit of constructive engagement and national interest but stressed the urgency of the matter, proposing that the meeting be held within 48 hours.

“The concerns particularly relate to the administration, management, and oversight of elections, the fair and equitable participation of political parties and independent candidates and the safeguarding of electoral integrity, accountability, and constitutional compliance,” he said.

Dr Zimba has also stated that He said the TONSE Alliance remains committed to working with the ECZ to strengthen electoral governance and uphold the democratic will of the Zambian people.

He said considering the significance of these matters, the Tonse Alliance will avail its Presidents, Secretary Generals and senior leadership to participate in this engagement at the highest level.

The Tonse Alliance is a coalition of over thirty (30) political parties and allied civil society organisation’s and have backed the request.

Among those who have supported and endorse the request letter include Alliance President Hon Brian Mundubile, Vice President Chifumu Banda,  and DAVIES Chisopa.
