KAFWAYA QUESTIONS SOURCE OF UPND DELEGATES IN INTERNAL ELECTIONS.
….Cites expired mandates for party structures and leadership.
Lusaka – Wednesday, 8 April 2026 (Smart Eagles).
Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya has slammed the UPND over weak democratic practices within the party.
Speaking today, Hon Kafwaya questioned the legitimacy of the party’s intra-party elections because the mandates for its structures and office bearers have reportedly expired.
He has urged the UPND to uphold democratic standards that will inspire confidence among opposition parties and the international community.
Hon Kafwaya has also called upon the UPND to clarify whether the party’s current processes meet acceptable democratic standards.
“We heard an announcement of Hon Mwaliteta being re-elected as provincial chairman. Where did the delegates who elected Mwaliteta come from because according to Mr Charles Longwe and others, you now have a situation where all those structures had their mandates expired. How do you use expired mandates to validate a mandate of somebody, is that a good standard, I do not think that is the good standard at all.
The secretary general, all these office bearers we are hearing their mandates expired. Where is the UPND drawing the mandate to organize intra party elections, who is sanctioning these intra party elections? I want the UPND to be clear so that we know, whether that particular office holder who is sanctioning the elections has his or her mandate valid. We have been told that their mandates expired,” he said.
