ELVIS NKANDU SAYS OPPOSITION FRAGMENTATION FAVORS UPND AHEAD OF ELECTIONS

By Joseph Kaputula

UPND deputy spokesperson Elvis Nkandu has questioned why the ruling party would want to block new political parties from being formed, saying the fragmentation of the opposition plays to the ruling party’s advantage ahead of the August general elections.

Mr. Nkandu explains that the more opposition parties there are, the more likely votes will be split, a situation likely to disadvantage the opposition.

He has accused the opposition of being greedy and unwilling to unite, leading some to form new parties.

Speaking to Phoenix News, Mr. Nkandu however noted that not following the correct registration procedure could contribute to delays in registering a party.

He was reacting to allegations by some opposition political parties that the UPND is interfering with the operations of the Registrar of Societies to prevent or delay some opposition parties from being registered.
