EU fails to sanction Israel Hungary veto blocks unified action

The European Union has failed to move forward with sanctions against Israel after Hungary vetoed a proposal despite support from 26 out of 27 member states.

The plan aimed to partially suspend the EU–Israel Association Agreement in response to escalating regional tensions, but could not be enforced due to the EU’s unanimity requirement on foreign policy decisions.

The vote followed mounting public pressure across Europe, including a petition with over one million signatures calling for a review of trade ties and stronger diplomatic measures.

While the majority backed economic pressure on Israel, Hungary’s opposition ultimately halted the process, exposing deep divisions within the EU’s foreign policy framework.
