ZAMBIAN CHURCHES JOIN TO CONDEMN YO MAPS “BUDGET” WOMEN KISSING VIDEO

The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) has joined growing public concern over controversial scenes in renowned Zambian musician Yo Maps’s latest music video “Budget,” which features two women kissing.

The concerns come shortly after the Independent Broadcasting Authority warned television stations against airing music content containing inappropriate material.

Speaking on the matter, CCZ General Secretary James Phiri warned entertainers and influencers to exercise wisdom, sensitivity and responsibility when using their platforms, stressing that influence comes with great responsibility.

The song “Budget,” released two weeks ago, is part of Yo Maps’ 16-track album Vibes on Vibes and has sparked mixed reactions among music lovers and stakeholders, including the Zambia Association of Musicians.

While some members of the public have condemned the video on moral grounds, others argue that criticism has been selective, noting that sexually suggestive dressing and performances at music shows often go unchecked.

Rev. Phiri said public concerns surrounding the video and its possible social impact should not be ignored, adding that entertainers should aim to positively influence society.

“This moment presents an opportunity to reflect on the growing moral challenges within society, trends which, if left unchecked, could weaken the moral fabric of the nation,” he said.

He added that Church appreciates the role artists play in promoting Zambia but continues to raise concerns over increasing sexualisation in public media.

“For us, this is not merely about criticism or condemnation, but about moral conscience and social responsibility,” Rev. Phiri stated.
