THABO KAWANA DISMISSES CLAIMS GOVT WILL HANDOVER POWER TO MILITARY AND SHUTDOWN INTERNET IN THE EVENT OF ELECTION DEFEAT

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has dismissed social media claims suggesting that he said government would hand over power to the military rather than to Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile in the event of an election defeat.

Mr. Kawana has also dismissed claims that he had said government would shut down the internet, describing both allegations as false and part of a disinformation campaign.

Speaking during a media and elections capacity building training workshop in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Kawana said the statements attributed to him did not appear on any of his official communication platforms, including his Facebook page, the Ministry of Information and Media Facebook page or through credible media outlets.

He explained that he communicates through established media platforms such as television, radio, newspapers and recognized online media, arguing that any statements attributed to him outside those channels should be treated with caution.

Mr. Kawana has accused some social media pages of deliberately spreading false information, warning that those responsible for spreading what he termed falsehoods would eventually be held accountable.
