France to Temporarily Deploy Two SAMP/T Air Defense Systems to Ukraine

France has announced that it will temporarily deploy two SAMP/T air defense systems to Ukraine, helping strengthen the country’s defenses against ongoing Russian missile attacks while Kyiv awaits delivery of its next-generation SAMP/T NG batteries.

According to reports, Ukraine has ordered four Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG air defense systems, with funding secured through the Ukraine Support Loan (USL) program for 2026 and 2027. Under the arrangement, the two current-generation SAMP/T systems will remain in Ukraine until the new batteries are delivered, after which they will be returned to France.

The move comes as Ukraine continues to face repeated Russian ballistic and cruise missile strikes targeting major cities, military facilities, and critical infrastructure. The temporary deployment is intended to ensure there is no gap in Ukraine’s air defense capabilities during the transition to the more advanced SAMP/T NG systems.

The announcement also highlights a broader evolution in European military support for Ukraine. Rather than focusing solely on supplying existing weapons, European allies are increasingly investing in Ukraine’s long-term defense capabilities through joint production, technology transfers, and licensed manufacturing.

In recent days, France has also announced agreements supporting the licensed production of SCALP cruise missiles, AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs, and Aster-30 interceptor missiles. Meanwhile, Ukraine and its international partners have unveiled the FREYJA anti-ballistic missile initiative, aimed at strengthening the country’s future missile defense network

The latest agreement signals Europe’s continued commitment to enhancing Ukraine’s long-term security, with growing emphasis on building a sustainable air defense architecture capable of protecting the country against future aerial threats. 
