ZELENSKYY ADDRESSES FEDOROV, THE MILITARY DISPUTE, AND UKRAINE’S NEXT DEFENSE MINISTER
President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly addressed the political turmoil surrounding the resignation of Mykhailo Fedorov, confirming for the first time that there was a serious disagreement between Ukraine’s General Staff and the Ministry of Defense.
One of the biggest takeaways from the briefing was Zelensky’s assurance that Fedorov’s departure does not mean the end of his role in government. The president said he still sees Fedorov as part of his team and that discussions will take place regarding what his future position will be.
Zelensky also acknowledged that a conflict existed between the General Staff and the Ministry of Defense, stating that the leadership on both sides was ultimately unable to reach an agreement. It is the clearest public confirmation yet that tensions had developed within Ukraine’s military leadership.
Regarding the search for a new defense minister, Zelensky confirmed that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko remains one of the candidates, although his nomination has not yet been submitted to parliament. The president added that he believes Klymenko could help reduce the controversial practice known as “busification,” referring to aggressive street mobilization methods that have drawn criticism inside Ukraine.
Finally, Zelensky addressed the nationwide demonstrations that erupted following Fedorov’s resignation. Rather than criticizing the protests, he emphasized that even during wartime, Ukrainians have the right to express their views.
“Even during war, with all its difficulties and restrictions, people can demonstrate their will. I believe that is the most important thing. So I understand, I hear, and I even respond.”
The briefing marks an important shift in the discussion. While questions remain about why Fedorov left the Ministry of Defense, Zelensky has now confirmed that disagreements at the highest levels of Ukraine’s military leadership played a role, while signaling that Fedorov’s service to Ukraine is not yet over.
