M’MEMBE, KALABA CRY FOUL OVER HH CAMPAIGN TIMETABLE

President Hakainde Hichilema’s campaign activities are clashing with their scheduled programmes, creating what they describe as an uneven playing field ahead of the August elections.

Citizens First leader Harry Kalaba has complained to Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis, alleging that his party’s campaigns in Northern and Luapula provinces were disrupted by the President’s activities.

The ECZ introduced a presidential campaign timetable aimed at preventing clashes and possible confrontations among candidates, but the arrangement excluded President Hichilema on the basis that he is the sitting Head of State with official duties to perform.

Supporters of the President argue that he cannot be restricted to a campaign timetable because his movements are also linked to national responsibilities. However, critics say public engagements by the incumbent during election season can still provide a campaign advantage.

Socialist Party leader Dr Fred M’membe has also accused the President’s campaign team of repeatedly coinciding with his party’s programmes, claiming that activities on the Copperbelt were affected and that the planned Mazabuka rally today would interfere with the Socialist Party’s schedule.

The debate has reignited questions over balancing the constitutional role of an incumbent president with the need for a fair and level campaign environment for all candidates.
