NATIONAL MOURNING
PRESIDENT HICHILEMA DECLARES NATIONAL MOURNING FOR VETERAN FREEDOM FIGHTER DR. ALINA NYIKOSA
President Hakainde Hichilema declared today, Wednesday, 22nd July 2026, a Day of National Mourning in honour of the late Honourable Dr. Alina Mwininyilamba Nyikosa, in recognition of her distinguished service to Zambia.
Dr. Nyikosa died on Saturday, 18th July 2026, at the age of 85, in Solwezi District after a short illness.
She was among the pioneering women who joined Zambia’s liberation struggle at an early age and went on to serve with distinction as Minister of Health under the UNIP Government.
She also represented North-Western Province on the party’s Central Committee, played a key role in Zambia’s return to multi-party democracy, and was a tireless champion of women’s leadership.
As part of the National Mourning, all national flags are flying at half-mast today.
The Official Funeral Church Service will be held at Solwezi Central CMML Church, before burial at Kimiteto Cemetery.
Government has called on all Zambians to join in paying their final respects and honouring the life, service and enduring legacy of the late Honourable Dr. Alina Mwininyilamba Nyikosa.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
