GCC urges UN Security Council to deter Iran, condemns Houthi threats
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) renewed calls on the UN Security Council to take action to deter Iran and condemned Houthi threats to international shipping, according to remarks delivered at a UN meeting on Wednesday.
“We renew our demands to the international community, led by the UN Security Council, to assume its legal responsibilities to put an end to these attacks and deter Iran from continuing its aggressive policies in order to protect international peace and security and safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the GCC General Secretariat said in highlights from a speech delivered at a UN Security Council high-level open debate.
The council also said the attacks “represent an extension of an approach that harms the Iranian people themselves,” accusing Iran’s leadership of pursuing escalation and conflict instead of development.
The GCC further “condemn[ed] in the strongest terms” what it described as hostile statements by Yemen’s Houthis, including threats to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait, saying such remarks violated international law and posed “a direct threat to the freedom of international navigation” and global trade and energy supplies.
The remarks were published by the GCC General Secretariat following the July 22 UN Security Council debate on natural resources governance.
